SCUTE

We are a Research Coordination Network Incubator funded by the National Science Foundation. The Science Communication in Undergraduate Teaching and Education (SCUTE) Research Coordination Network aims to create an inclusive and sustainable community of practice that will increase capacity for effective and ethical teaching of science communication (scicomm) in undergraduate biology education (UBE).

MISSION STATEMENT

In an era of national and global environmental crises and increasing distrust of scientific findings, efforts have been made to enhance the science communication skills of graduate students and other academic scientists. Yet, undergraduate students outnumber biologists with advanced degrees, and those who do not enter academia are likely to interface with a variety of important stakeholders in their jobs. However, undergraduates need training and practice in science communication to meet this challenge. And, instructors need support, community, and resources to help get their students there. The goal of our RCN is to generate a network of educators dedicated to unifying undergraduate biology education and scicomm (UBE+SCICOMM) to help our students be effective and ethical communicators of science to the public.

About our logo

Our logo was inspired by a box turtle, where the scutes of the shell are shown as interconnected networks that represent our collaborative group. The color scheme is based on colors found in an image from Rocky Mountain National Park.
